Honduras is on the rise as a tourist destination, although I still have many people asking me where it is. (and in all honesty, I didn’t really know until I had booked my first gap year trip there). It is a country with a varied history and like many other Central American countries, there are very distinct tourism areas and places, as a visitor, there is no need to go. Honduras has everything from Caribbean Islands, to rain forests and Mayan Ruins. We currently live and run business on the largest of the Bay Islands- Roatan.
The Bay Islands
The North west of the country is predominantly coastline. The warm waters of the Caribbean sea stretch for about 700km but you won’t find the beach resorts or many accessible tourism destinations here. Instead, about 35miles north of La Ceiba, you will find the Bay Islands. The Bay Islands are comprised 53 small Cays or Islands, with Roatan being the largest and most visited. They are well know to divers to be a gate way to the Meso American Reef with the coral reef being only a few minutes boat ride from the beach.
The Mainland
The mainland of Honduras is one to be cautious of where you venture. It is well known for gang violence, however, this is mainly in the large cities and by sticking to the tourist areas you will be welcomed with open arms. The Pico Bonito Area, just outside La Ceiba is renowned for its mountainous region and white water rafting. Copan is a huge hit for the Mayan Ruins.
